#OccupySLU and #SayTheirNames Interfaith Prayer Vigil Will Be October 12
10/06/2023
The Department of Campus Ministry and the Division of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement are hosting a #SayTheirNames Interfaith Prayer Vigil at 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, at the Clock Tower. The event is part of the #OccupySLU week programming.
Occupy SLU started in October 2014 with six days of peaceful occupation at Saint Louis University's campus clock tower that included daily teach-ins and community conversations, following the officer-involved shootings of two African American young men: Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and VonDerrit Myers Jr., the son of a long-time member of the SLU community, VonDerrit Myers Sr., in the nearby Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis.
Each year, SLU honors this historical moment on campus with events and prayer. During the vigil, we will also bring attention to victims of systemic racism and racial injustice in the United States with #SayTheirNames — listening to names that represent but only a sample of the racial atrocities that Black people have had to endure.
Rain location is the Center for Global Citizenship. For more information contact Sue Chawszczewski, director of campus ministry.
