SLU to Commemorate 10th Anniversary of OccupySLU with Campus-Wide Events

08/15/2024

Occupy SLU started in October 2014 with six days of peaceful occupation at Saint Louis University's campus clock tower that included daily teach-ins and community conversations, following the officer-involved shootings of two African American young men: Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and VonDerrit Myers Jr., the son of a long-time member of the SLU community, VonDerrit Myers Sr., in the nearby Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis.

As the 10th anniversary of OccupySLU approaches, the entire Saint Louis University community is invited to join in a campus-wide commemoration of this pivotal moment in SLU's shared history. This milestone is an opportunity for the University to come together in reflection, dialogue, and action, honoring the lasting impact of OccupySLU on our campus and beyond.

The Division of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement will be hosting larger commemorative events and is encouraging the community to take part by organizing their own events such as teach-ins, discussions, or other initiatives that reflect the themes of justice, equity, and inclusion that OccupySLU embodied.

If anyone would like to host an event and would like to discuss an idea, reach out to Aubra Ladd, coordinator in the Center for Social Action, and Luella Loseille, assistant director of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

DICE encourages everyone — students, faculty, staff, and community members — to contribute to this collective endeavor by organizing events, discussions, or initiatives that resonate with the themes of justice, equity, and inclusion that OccupySLU embodied.
