08/22/2024
Campus Recreation and Wellness has announced the launch of a new pilot Fitness Center Orientation Program at the Simon Recreation Center. This program is designed to empower Billikens with the knowledge and skills to navigate and use the facility’s fitness areas confidently.
The program is tailored to ensure that students and members increase their understanding of the many fitness and exercise areas, recreational equipment as well as physical, mental, and social wellness resources available through the department.
Fitness Center Orientation Program highlights include:
- Introduction to Fitness and Exercise Areas: Students will be guided through the fitness and exercise areas of the Simon Rec Center, including the indoor track, indoor pool, cardio, strength, free weight (such as dumbbells and barbells), functional, and stretching areas. This tour helps students learn the layout of the center, so they can easily find and use each area.
- Understanding Selectorized Strength Machines: Students will learn how to properly use selectorized strength machines, including how to adjust seat positions, handle settings, and weight resistance. This orientation will help students exercise safely and correctly at their own fitness level.
- Squat Rack Safety and Usage: The orientation will cover the proper adjustment of safety bars and barbell rack holders within half racks, ensuring that students can perform squats and other barbell exercises safely, if they choose to.
- Treadmill Operation: Students will receive hands-on training on operating treadmills, including starting programs, adjusting speed and incline levels, and understanding safety features.
- Navigating Group Fitness Spaces and Programs: The orientation will help students locate Simon Rec's multipurpose rooms and spin room, where group fitness classes are held. Additionally, students will learn how to find the group fitness schedule, sign up for free group fitness classes, and register for personal training sessions.
- Introduction to Recreational and Aquatic Programs: The program will also introduce students to the wide range of recreational and aquatic programs available, including intramural and club sports, CPR/First Aid training, swim lessons, and free water safety lessons.
This pilot program furthers the department’s commitment to promoting a healthy, active, and balanced lifestyle among its students and members by ensuring they are well-equipped to make the most of the recreational facilities and programs available at SLU. The orientation is free and open to all students and members of the SRC. It will be offered multiple times throughout the first three weeks of the fall semester.
