01/23/2024
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents a faculty and guest recital on Monday, Jan. 29, at 4:30 p.m. in the Xavier Hall Recital Studio (room 348) featuring Instructor of Horn Thomas Jöstlein, Instructor of Piano Shen Wen, and guest bassoonist Henry Skolnick.
The recital will include the premiere of a newly revised trio composed by Eric Ewazen — a revision made by the composer for this performance. Also on the program is a trio for alphorn, bassoon, and piano as well as a trio composed by Leighton Lucas. The recital is free and open to the public.
Thomas Jöstlein, associate Principal Horn of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) since 2010 and Instructor of Horn at Saint Louis University, has held positions with the New York Philharmonic, and the Honolulu, Kansas City, Omaha, and Richmond Symphonies. Winner of the 2003 American Horn Competition, he has soloed with the SLSO (most recently, Strauss’ First Concerto) and many others.
He has served on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, VCU, Saint Louis University and at the University of Hawai’i. He has also taught and played at the Eastern, Napa Valley, Classical Tahoe, Britt and Brevard Music Festivals.
Henry Skolnick was a member of the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, in Miami, for eighteen years and taught bassoon and wind chamber music at Florida International University for fifteen years. He has been on the summer faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp since 2004. In addition to his years in the Florida Philharmonic, he has performed with the St. Louis Symphony, The Chicago Symphony, The Boston Symphony, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Palm Beach Opera, the Kansas City Symphony, The Colorado Symphony, the Miami Chamber Symphony, the Florida Grand Opera Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra Berlin.
He currently serves as Co-Principal bassoon of Sinfonia da Camera, in Champaign-Urbana, IL. On the baroque bassoon Henry performs with Collegium Vocale and Kingsbury Ensemble. In addition to his performing, Henry is the Associate Librarian of the St. Louis Symphony.
Pianist Shen Wen has performed as a soloist at Tchaikovsky Conservatory College, Powell Symphony Hall, Tsinghua University, and Jordan Hall among other notable venues. As a founding member of the St. Louis Yangtze River Art Ensemble, a non-profit organization that promotes Chinese performing arts in the St. Louis area, Shen has created programs and provided performances for the Chinese Culture Days at the St. Louis Botanical Gardens. In her free time, she enjoys being outdoors and baking.
