This year a new award was created to honor a student within the program. Named after SLU's Associate Provost, the Dr. Steven Sanchez Award in Student Achievement recognizes a student within the program that is not only outstanding academically but also demonstrates a profound sense of compassion, purpose, and service to others.

Through their actions, they reflect the transformative power of education and the profound impact individuals can have when they dedicate themselves to intellectual growth, service, and compassion. The first ever Dr. Steven Sanchez Award in Student Achievement was presented to Emily Smith, a senior at First Baptist Academy in O’Fallon, Illinois.

Smith was an 1818 student in multiple classes with 1818 instructor Sarah Hines during her junior and senior years.

“Emily is one of those students who puts her best foot forward in all that she does ... her output of work and engagement in class is excellent, but I also observe from the sidelines the incredible amount of balance that Emily has mastered with all of her responsibilities ... which she never, ever brags about," Hines said.

In addition to the new student award, the following annual awards were presented to the following educators within the program:

M. Cathlin Casey Award in Teaching Excellence

Coordinator Leadership Award

1818 Liaison of the Year Award
