Reimagined Interprofessional Education to Launch July 1
05/14/2024
Interprofessional Education (IPE) plays a crucial role in shaping students into collaborative, person-centered health professionals.
In March 2023, Saint Louis University’s Provost, Michael Lewis, Ph.D., charged a task force to restructure IPE within the university. This task force developed a transition plan involving two phases: shifting the existing program from the School of Medicine to Academic Affairs and creating a structure with broad stakeholder involvement in Interprofessional Collaboration.
The reimagined IPE Program, set to launch on July 1, 2024, includes several key elements:
- Centralized within Academic Affairs to enhance accessibility for all students and foster innovation.
- Aligned with strategic university planning and comprehensive assessment.
- Supported by administrative, core, and advisory teams to guide its strategic development and stakeholder engagement.
- IPE Affiliate faculty from various departments will engage in teaching, research, and leadership.
- Ongoing faculty development for interprofessional collaboration and research.
- Established as a hub for interprofessionalism through enriched academic and community collaborations.
- Enhanced marketing efforts to establish SLU as a leader in global Interprofessional Education.
The program will be housed in the Education Union on South Campus, with a dedicated team led by:
- Lisa Dorsey Ph.D., Associate Provost, Undergraduate Education
- Anthony Breitbach Ph.D., Director of Interprofessional Education, Professor, Doisy College of Health Sciences
- Jessica Barreca Ph.D., Program Manager - Community Programs
- Tammy Williams, IPE Program Office Manager
- Sarah Liebowitz, Graduate Research Assistant
The following faculty members will join the Administrative Team to comprise the Core Team:
- Kim Levenhagen, DPT, IPE Faculty Affiliate, Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training
- Selena Washington, Ph.D., IPE Faculty Affiliate, Associate Professor, Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy
- Nichol Reeves, IPE Faculty Affiliate, Assistant Professor, Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing
- Maegan Roper, IPE Faculty Affiliate, Assistant Professor, Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing
- Katherine Mathews, M.D., School of Medicine Liaison, Professor and Associate Dean of Health Systems Science, School of Medicine
The goal is to prepare graduates who are collaborative, person-centered, and adept at advocating for equity and social justice in their professional practice, in line with the Jesuit tradition.
