SLU Chess Freshmen Taking Part Chess Olympiad in Budapest

Two members of SLU's chess team, Grandmaster Nikolozi Kacharava from Georgia and Women's International Master Mariam Mkrtchyan from Armenia, will be representing their respective countries at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.

The event will run from Tuesday, Sept. 10, to Monday, Sept. 23. 

The Chess Olympiad takes place every two years and is regarded as one of the most anticipated events and holds a special importance for many countries' national pride. About two hundred countries will be sending their best players to compete for medals. 

Currently both players are training hard and preparing for this event, said Varuzhan Akobiam, SLU Chess Team Head Coach. Akobian will also be there to support the students throughout this tournament.
