Second Conference on AI for Medicine at Saint Louis University Is May 2
The second conference on AI for Medicine at SLU will be held on Friday, May 2, in the Busch Student Center. The one-day event is open to SLU faculty, staff and students.
The event is free and open to members of the SLU community. Organizers Adriana Montano, Ph.D., professor of pediatrics, biochemistry and molecular biology and vice dean for research in the School of Medicine, and Flavio Esposito, Ph.D., associate professor of computer science, say the goal of the event is to convene SLU experts for a deep dive into AI’s role in medicine and to spark collaboration.
The event will feature a keynote presentation from the University of Missouri’s Praveen Rao, Ph.D., on “IBDEEP: A Diagnostic Tool for Preventing Colorectal Cancer in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients.”
The event begins with a networking breakfast and opening remarks. The first morning session will feature 15 minute talks from SLU faculty, including:
- AR/VR in Healthcare - Presented by Min Hyung Choi, Ph.D., professor and chair of computer science
- AI Research Work Flows in Practice: Examples from ECMO Prediction - Presented by Ayaka Tsutsumi, M.D., research fellow in pediatric surgery at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital
- Visual Odometry and 3D Reconstruction for Capsule Endoscopy - Presented by Omar Tahri, visiting professor in ECE and computer science.
A second session will include progress reports on two 2023-24 Seed Grants - Machine Learning Application for Advancing Spinal Implant Identification and Neuromorphic Systems for Predictive Fall Prevention in Parkinson’s Disease.
The afternoon will feature a series of lightning talks. Topics include:
- AI in Transplantation by Henry Randall, M.D., professor of surgery
- Using NLP and Robotics in Healthcare: Assisting Individuals with Limited Mobility by Madi Babaiasl, Ph.D., the Clare Luce Booth assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering
- Ab Initio Antibiotic Development with Generative AI by Maureen Donlin, Ph.D., director of the Research Computing Group and Jie Hou, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science
- Organ Detection in Laparoscopic Surgery by Lin Guo, Ph.D., post-doctoral fellow in computer science.
The event is sponsored by Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine and School of Science and Engineering.
