Seven Ways to be an Outstanding Billiken Alum

Congratulations, class of 2017! After four years of studying, researching and serving, you're about to be declared "sons and daughters of Saint Louis University forever." To better help you thrive and connect to SLU after graduation, we asked some Billikens their thoughts on how to succeed as alumni. Here's what they had to say.

Graduates at Commencement.

Graduates celebrate their graduation during Commencement in Chaifetz Arena.

  1. "Just as you will stay in touch with the good friends that you made, also stay in touch and involved with Saint Louis University and its activities. SLU will always be your alma mater." Pat Forster (A&S '69), Women's Council president 2014-2016
  1. "Alumni are ambassadors and stewards for the university. Strive to display the values instilled in you as a student to encourage the growth and prosperity of SLU in the future." Jake Fechter (Cook '14), Billikens of the Last Decade advisory board member
  1. "Volunteer at high school college fairs, round up fellow alums in your area to attend a summer baseball game or wish the best to incoming SLU freshmen at a send-off party. The greatest reward of staying involved as an alum is keeping your SLU family close even while away from the boundaries of Laclede and Lindell." Emily A. Farinacci (A&S '09, Cook '09)
  1. "Update your information with the Office of Alumni Engagement, check the alumni webpage for events in your area, and see if your new city has alumni social media outlets." Joe Havel, (Cook '91)
  1. "You can be a good alum just by being a visible Billiken in your community. Wear SLU gear, and be sure to flip through Universitas to stay up to date on SLU happenings. Be the authority on all things SLU in your neighborhood." Eric Wilson (Cook '09, Ed '16), San Francisco Alumni club volunteer
  1. "Get involved in your local alumni club. If there isn't one, talk to SLU about starting one where you are. No alumni club suffers from too much help: bring your talents and ideas." Jim Swift (Cook '06), Washington D.C. Alumni club volunteer
  1. "You can connect to SLU in so many ways — through a donation for a scholarship, volunteering at an alumni event or helping the Billiken network grow by recommending a student to apply." Dustin Paluch (Cook '14), Billikens of the Last Decade advisory board member
