Huang and Maynard named fellows of the Society for Social Work and Research

Two faculty members of Saint Louis University's College for Public Health and Social Justice have been recognized for their leadership in the advancement of social work research that promotes a diverse, equitable and just society.

Jin Huang and Brandy Maynard will be inducted to the Society for Social Work and Research's fellowship program in January 2017.

As part of the Society for Social Work and Research's 2017 fellowship program, Jin Huang, Ph.D., associate professor of social work, and Brandy Maynard, Ph.D., assistant professor of social work, join a cadre of colleagues who have served with distinction to advance the mission of the nation’s leading scientific organization in the field of social work.

Huang conducts research in food insecurity, poverty and asset building for low-income households, among other areas. His teaching areas include social policy and research methods in SLU's Master of Social Work and Ph.D. in social work programs. Recently, Huang was featured in the National Association of Social Work News on social work’s role in reducing income inequality.

Maynard's research areas include the causes and development of educational and behavior problems in at-risk youth; the use and quality of research in education and the social sciences; and advanced research and meta-analytic methods. She is the editor of the Social Welfare Coordinating Group with the Campbell Collaboration and a member of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology. She teaches courses in research methods, evaluation of practice and advanced clinical practice in the M.S.W. program.

Huang and Maynard will be inducted at the society's annual conference in New Orleans on January 14, 2017, joining their SLU colleague Michael Vaughn, Ph.D., director of the Ph.D. in social work program, who was recognized with the inaugural class of fellows in 2014.

The fellows are chosen based on objective measures of research productivity, research dissemination and leadership activities, and represent no more than 10 percent of the organization’s total membership, according to SSWR.
