Sixteen teams of undergraduate public health students from across the United States competed in the 2018 Public Health Scholar Bowl at Saint Louis University on April 14.
Now in its sixth year, the Scholar Bowl is an opportunity for undergraduate students
to test their public health knowledge, connect with their peers, and compete for cash
prizes of up to $1,000 in a quiz bowl competition and a case study challenge.
This year, the case study and keynote topics focused on global health, specifically
on health disparities in low and middle income countries.
“But, as you continue your studies and enter your public health career, remember that
global is local and poorer areas in your own cities may face similar problems to those
abroad,” added Thomas Burroughs, Ph.D., dean of the College for Public Health and
Social Justice, in his welcoming remarks at the event.
The 2018 case study competition winners were:
- 1st place – Macalester College
- 2nd place – Lindenwood College
Quiz bowl competition winners:
- 1st place – Johns Hopkins University
- 2nd place – Ohio State University
This year’s keynote speaker was Rhonda BeLue, Ph.D, who spoke about her work in Senegal with communicable disease management.
