New CPHSJ Workshop Series to Prepare Faculty for Potential Teaching Challenges
02/01/2025
The Saint Louis University College for Public Health and Social Justice is partnering with the Paul C. Reinert, S.J. Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning to host a workshop series for faculty this February, March and April. The miniseries, "Managing Group Dynamics in the Classroom," will focus on a teaching challenge that is rooted in the types of group dynamics we commonly experience or observe in the classroom.
SLU's Reinert Center team will facilitate this series. Techniques and strategies to consider while meeting those challenges will be reviewed. This three-part workshop miniseries will include presenters and experts in various topics who will explore techniques, values and approaches.
The interactive workshops will take place at noon in the newly renovated second floor of the Wool Center, in classroom 294.
The series includes three sessions:
Monday, Feb. 17: "Quieting Classroom Disruption through Shared Behaviors"
- Presenters: Nicole States and Mitch Lorenz
- Participants will explore values around classroom behaviors, as well as the culturally situated assumptions underlying those values. They will then begin creating a plan to establish class-specific norms with their students.
Monday, March 17: "Creating Effective Learning Groups"
- Presenters: Robert Cole
- Participants will explore effective techniques for setting student groups and supporting them in achieving the goals of their work together.
Monday, April 14 at Noon: "Setting Up Students for Test-Taking Success"
- Presenters: Christopher Grabau and Eric Royer
- Participants will examine their approaches to test-taking and learn to strengthen how they communicate expectations about test-taking norms appropriate to student learning in their courses.
Registration is required.
