Saint Louis University Celebrates Eugene Kranz’s Election to the National Academy of Engineering

05/07/2024

Saint Louis University proudly announces that alumnus Eugene Kranz, a distinguished figure in aerospace and former NASA flight director, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, a testament to his lifetime achievements and contributions to aeronautics and space exploration.

Eugene Kranz, whose career is a beacon of inspirational leadership and technical excellence, began his journey at SLU’s Parks College of Engineering, Aviation, and Technology in 1951. With a comprehensive education that included hands-on experiences like welding and engine repair, Kranz credits his time at SLU as the foundation of his illustrious career.

After graduating in 1954 with a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering, Kranz joined the U.S. Air Force and later transitioned to a role at McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. His path took a pivotal turn in 1960 when he joined NASA's Space Task Group as an assistant flight director for Project Mercury. Known for his cool composure and adept problem-solving, Kranz rapidly ascended to become the flight director for the Apollo Program, guiding historic missions such as the first lunar landing of Apollo 11 and the heroic rescue of Apollo 13 after a critical in-space emergency.

Eugene Kranz’s leadership and his commitment to the principle that "failure is not an option" have not only marked pivotal moments in aerospace history but have also earned him widespread recognition, including portrayals in Hollywood films and numerous accolades from aeronautics organizations.

In honor of Kranz's far-reaching impact, Saint Louis University's School of Science and Engineering has introduced the Gene Kranz Professorship of Research/Teaching Excellence. This professorship aims to inspire future generations of engineers and explorers, mirroring Kranz’s dedication and innovative spirit.

Dean Gregory E. Triplett, Ph.D., expressed his enthusiasm about the professorship, stating, "It is our utmost pleasure to celebrate Eugene Kranz, not just as an alumnus, but as a symbol of what every student at SLU can aspire to achieve. We are confident that this professorship will motivate our students to reach far and never surrender."

Eugene Kranz’s story is a vivid reminder of how a solid educational foundation can lead to monumental achievements. As his legacy continues to inspire, SLU remains committed to fostering the same spirit of innovation and excellence in all its students.
