Prioritizing Safety as We Begin the Semester
August 31, 2023
Dear members of the SLU community,
With the start of a new semester and in light of two deeply concerning incidents near campus recently, I want to address our shared commitment to safety and well-being here at Saint Louis University.
SLU's Department of Public Safety has resources, training, and relationships with local law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of our campus. Our dedicated public safety team includes 80 highly trained officers who patrol the campus and its borders 24/7, supported by 12 highly trained dispatchers. (See more DPS and campus safety facts below.)
DPS will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our campus remains a safe and secure environment that fosters trust, equity, and accountability. But we can’t do it alone. Safety is a collective effort that requires awareness, vigilance, and active participation from all of us.
So, remain alert. Stay informed. (Please read our DPS communications!) And, most importantly, look out for each other.
I also encourage you to utilize the many safety-related resources available at SLU, including:
- Crime prevention and emergency preparedness courses: Taught by DPS officers who have attended specialized training to become certified instructors in the subject matter.
- Mental Health First Aid: Training to help you to assist someone experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.
- SLU’s Title IX Resource Center: Support for victims of sexual harassment and assault, as well as information on education and prevention efforts.
- SLU Ride: Free van transport during evening and weekend hours.
- DPS Escorts: Vehicle and walking escorts on campus and surrounding streets.
- RAVE Guardian: A free mobile app that turns your smartphone into a personal safety device, enabling you to travel more safely on and off campus.
Don’t forget to report any crime or suspicious activity on campus immediately by calling DPS at 314-977-3000. If an incident occurs off campus, call 911 immediately, then contact DPS as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns about campus safety, please don't
hesitate to contact our public safety team. Your input is invaluable as we work together
to make SLU a place where everyone feels secure, respected, and supported.
Wishing you all a safe and successful semester.
Sincerely,
Melinda Heikkinen
