SLU Key Card Access Updates
November 7, 2023
Dear members of the SLU community,
We are writing to inform you about a recent incident involving students who used an electronic device to replicate SLU ID cards, allowing them to gain unauthorized access to residence hall rooms.
The device has since been confiscated, and the incident is being addressed under SLU's student handbook and University policies. SLU policy prohibits the replication of SLU keys or key cards and the possession or use of any device that replicates key card credentials.
Following a thorough investigation, we believe we have identified the extent to which the unauthorized access privileges were used to enter living spaces and buildings. We found no physical harm or theft of property connected to these unauthorized entries.
As a result of our investigation, we are taking a number of steps to improve the security of our campus spaces.
We are beginning the process of upgrading our card access system for all campus buildings, offices, classrooms and labs. Because of the scope and complexity of this project, the upgrade will take a number of months.
We are also immediately issuing metal room keys to all students living in Grand Hall, Spring Hall, Robert May Hall and Grand Forest, which are the only residential buildings that use SLU ID cards to access individual rooms.
Students who reside in all other residence halls and apartments already rely on metal keys to access their living spaces.
Housing and Residence Life has provided affected students with instructions on how to obtain their metal keys.
While card access will no longer work for individual rooms, suites, or apartments in Grand Hall, Spring Hall, Robert May Hall and Grand Forest, students living in those buildings will continue to use their SLU ID cards for all the other things they do now, including dining, parking and printing, as well as for access to places like campus buildings, the library and recreation center.
We will share updates on our efforts to enhance our campus-wide key card access system in the coming months.
It’s important to remember that security is a shared responsibility. While we are implementing enhanced measures, there are actions you can take to ensure your room or office is secured, including:
- Lock the door to your room or office if you leave.
- Do not prop doors that should be locked.
- Safeguard your SLU ID card and your keys, and never share them with others.
- In your workspaces, keep private data secured digitally or in locked cabinets.
Your vigilance and cooperation are critical to maintaining the safety and security of our campus. If you become aware of any key card replication device on campus, please immediately contact SLU’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 314-977-3000.
If you have any concerns about the security of your room, office or access credentials, please contact DPS.
Sincerely,
Manisha Ford-Thomas, Ph.D.
