Father Michael Barber Undergraduate International Service Learning Award
The Barber International Service Learning Award honors former dean Michael Barber, S.J.'s steadfast support of the Jesuit mission to engage in service and learning at a global level. Current undergraduate students engaged in an international service project can apply for up to $500 for expenses such as travel, lodging or project costs.
Eligible undergraduates must be majoring in a discipline within the College of Arts and Sciences and can only receive the award once per academic year. Proposals must include your:
- Name, email address and phone number
- Academic department
- Faculty mentor’s name and email
- Project description in 500 words or less
- Travel destination
- Travel dates
- Itemized budget and the amount of any matching funds from your department
We recommend that you work closely with a faculty mentor in preparing a proposal, which must include the signature of your major’s departmental chair or program director.
The associate dean for undergraduate affairs administers the fund for this award.
Applications are judged on the the feasibility and impact of the project, its educational
value and the availability of matching funds from your department or other sources.

Student Research Funds
The Knoedler Research Fund, the Drahmann Research Sciences Fund, and the Primm Scholarship provide up to $500 in funding to help students conduct research or present the results of their research. These awards may be used for research supplies, computer software, minor equipment and travel to off-campus research sites or scholarly meetings.
Eligible students must be majoring in a discipline within the College of Arts and Sciences and can only receive a research award once per academic year. The associate dean who administers the fund will determine the appropriate funding source.
Proposals must be submitted by the faculty member sponsoring the student’s research.
For proposals involving group travel, one proposal should be submitted for the entire group, and up to $500 per student may be requested. Proposals must include the following information:
- Sponsoring faculty member’s name, email address and department
- Student’s name and email address
- Student’s level (undergraduate or graduate) and major or graduate program department
- Project title
- Date of the proposed research or meeting
- Project description of no more than two pages
- Itemized budget and the amount and source of any matching fund
Proposals will be reviewed four times per academic year. Proposal deadlines are October 1, December 1, February 15 and April 15. Funding decisions will be made within one week of the proposal deadlines. Proposals received after the deadline will be reviewed after the next deadline.
An associate dean administers the funds for this award. Applications are judged on the project’s feasibility, the quality of the research or creative plan, educational value and the availability of matching funds from the department or other sources.
