Class Rankings

J.D. students are ranked according to their cumulative grade point averages (based on grades received at the School of Law) at the end of the fall and spring semesters. With the exception of the Final Ranks, a separate ranking is not calculated at the end of the summer semester.

J.D. students are placed in one of three ranking groups described below. Transfer J.D. students are provided an estimated class rank based on the J.D. students in their same ranking group. J.D. students who visit away for one or more semesters will receive a rank with an asterisk denoting the rank is based on the total number of credit hours earned at Saint Louis University School of Law.

First Year Ranks

First Year Ranks include all J.D. students who began their legal studies in a particular academic year, and who have completed the ranking semester. These students receive both a numerical and percentile rank. Fall First Year Ranks are usually available by the second week in January, and Spring First Year Ranks by the end of June.

Second Year Ranks*

This ranking group includes all J.D. students who have completed the fall semester and are not ranked in the first- or third-year rankings. These students receive both a numerical and a percentile rank.

Third Year Ranks*

This ranking group includes all J.D. students who will be graduating in a particular academic year (January, May or August). These students receive both a numerical and a percentile rank. The Spring Third Year Ranks (or Final Ranks) are calculated after all summer grades for graduating students are received. This information is generally available at the end of August.
