Study Abroad for Freshmen (First-Year)

Take your college career's start further. Spend a semester or full academic year in Spain at Saint Louis University — Madrid.

Two students chat on a patio. They sit on chairs at a table with an open laptop. The laptop has a sticker reading "No Spain, No Gain."

Your freshman year is likely to be your first time living away from home. Instead of crossing county or state lines, we dare you to cross the pond. For those looking for a unique start to their college career, SLU-Madrid allows you to earn college credit in English while studying in Spain.

How It Works
  1. Chat with a current student to learn more about Madrid.
  2. Browse the Courses and Syllabi page to see which classes can transfer to a U.S. university you plan to attend your sophomore year.
  3. Join a virtual session hosted by Admissions staff to discuss any questions you have.
  4. Apply to study abroad. Note application deadlines!
  5. Once admitted, immediately start the student visa application process.
What to Expect

The Madrid campus offers 200+ courses that are conducted in English. As you would with any other U.S. institution, you can transfer credits earned at SLU-Madrid to countless universities in the United States.

Classes are taught in English with select courses offered in Spanish. Though not required, you can choose to take Spanish classes to make the most of your time in Madrid.

You will take classes with degree-seeking SLU-Madrid students, visiting American students and international students from Spain and more than 65 countries.

SLU-Madrid welcomes you to participate in student-led clubs and organizations and to volunteer in its service and community outreach efforts as a visiting student. Teach English with Community ESL, give food to the homeless with BocaTalk or publish articles in The NewSLU.

Host Family and Housing Options

SLU-Madrid has no housing requirement unless you have already applied to study abroad during your freshman year via a U.S. university with a housing requirement.

Many study abroad students live with host family placements arranged by SLU-Madrid. Learn more on the housing page.
