Tracking Class of 2018 Graduates

03/27/2020

SLU-Madrid’s Class of 2018 have begun their professional careers or are continuing their education in 11 different countries.

A year and a half after the May 2018 graduation and a year after the December ceremony, 95% of graduates who have reported back to Career Services are either working or attending graduate school full time. They are spread across the globe in Angola, Belgium, China, Denmark, Egypt, Holland, Lebanon, Morocco, Mozambique, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Uganda and the United States.

The top sectors employing our graduates are business fields (marketing, startups, and finance), followed by education, communication, IT and translation.

Among the organizations now employing our graduates are BCME Bank, Everest, Instituto de Empresa (IE), Morning Star, Prosegur, Banco Inversis, Linea Directa Aseguradores and Kuwait Petroleum International.

Carlota Barreno-Fernández

While Carlota Barreno-Fernández '18 was pursuing a degree in international business at SLU-Madrid, she took on an internship with the College for International Studies (CIS). She later secured full-time employment as Community Manager and Content Creator at CIS.

Paula Otero Santos ’18 launched her post-graduation career at the British Embassy in Madrid, where she had previously interned as a student. She recently transitioned to a new position as assistant to chief of corporate investments and ventures at Instituto de Empresa’s IE Rockets, an accelerator and investment program for startups.

For Otero Santos, a SLU-Madrid education goes well beyond academics; it’s about forming the body, mind and soul, she says. “If you are a Billiken, I am sure you have heard of these three words. They are marked with fire in my heart. Find yourself a healthy hobby, enjoy lifelong learning and surround yourself with those who make you a better person. This will always be my best takeaway from my SLU experience!”

Matthew Bruton

Upon graduation, Matthew Bruton ’18 (International Business) sought a change of pace from his urban life in Madrid and began working as an outdoor guide at Northern Tier High Adventure in Ely Minnesota. “Being part of an extremely diverse community on campus and in Madrid as a SLU-Madrid student has made me better suited to working with camping participants from all walks of life,” he said. “My time at SLU-Madrid also sparked my interest in always helping others when I was an ESL teacher and got to work with the Sierra club. The skills I learned in these extracurricular activities really instilled in me the values to help others achieve their goals.”

Members of the Class of 2018 are also pursuing graduate studies at institutions including Pepperdine, IE, la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, University of San Francisco and Franklin University in Switzerland.
