Data Science Becomes SLU-Madrid's 21st Major

Degree-seeking students at Saint Louis University—Madrid can now pursue a B.S. in data science.
"The Bachelor of Science in Data Science at SLU-Madrid was driven by a comprehensive market study that utilized both public and specialized information, alongside continuous monitoring of growth trends across Spain and Europe," said Taieb Gasmi, Ph.D., associate dean and director of the Department of Engineering at SLU-Madrid.
"The study revealed a significant demand for highly skilled data scientists, particularly in response to growing technological advancements and the increasing reliance on data-driven decision-making across industries and businesses such as banking."
The degree's 120-credit coursework includes classes such as Introduction to Computer Science: Taming Big Data, Machine Learning and Data Structures to help students analyze, interpret and extract meaningful insights from data.
The program is divided into University Core, computer science, mathematics and statistics courses. A four-credit, two-part project and two one-credit practicums are required. Elective courses include topics like AI, deep learning and natural language processing.
"With the launch of this B.S. in data science — the first of its kind on an American campus in Spain — we offer both our current and prospective students the opportunity to engage in a program designed to develop their combined skills in mathematics and computer science," said program Director Luis Miguel Anguas Márquez.
"In particular, they will receive training in data analysis, machine learning, time series and other areas of statistics, equipping them to meet the primary demands of modern companies," he added.
